Words of Jesus 67
- John 21:1 After these things Jesus shewed himself
again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he
himself.
- 2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas
called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and
two other of his disciples.
- 3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing.
They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a
ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
It seems like Peter
was overwhelmed at the events that were taking place and thought to
go fishing. Perhaps he was just confused as to what to do next.
Maybe he was still feeling like a failure in light of his previous
denial of Christ. Putting myself in his shoes I would feel like I
was unworthy to serve the Lord and be tempted to return to my
previous occupation. Whatever the case, Jesus didn't feel like they
were ready to go preach the gospel yet. He still ministered to them
many times before His final return to the Father in Heaven. We see
here such love and concern Jesus had for those He was about to
leave.
- John 21:4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus
stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
- 5 Then Jesus saith unto them,
Children, have
ye any meat? They answered him, No.
- 6 And he said unto them,
Cast the net on the
right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they
were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
This was a repeat of what Jesus did for them
when He first called them to become His disciples. This further
showed them that He (Jesus) was who He said He was.
- John 21:8 And the other disciples came in a little
ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,)
dragging the net with fishes.
- 9 As soon then as they were come to land, they
saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
- 10 Jesus saith unto them,
Bring of the fish
which ye have now caught.
- 11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to
land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there
were so many, yet was not the net broken.
- 12 Jesus saith unto them,
Come and dine. And
none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
I guess the whole
resurrection was still a little unbelievable since it is something
that had not ever happened before. They still may have doubted up
until the time the Holy Ghost was poured out upon them at Pentecost.
We see a great change in the disciples and especially Peter after
that occurrence.
He was showing them
that He could eat and drink. He was not merely a spirit but a real
person who had been resurrected with a new body. He still had the
marks of the crucifixion for the sake of proof of what He suffered
on our behalf but otherwise this body can never suffer death, pain
or suffering in any way. This is our hope for we who believe will
receive the same as Jesus at the resurrection of the body.
- John 21:14 This is now the third time that Jesus
shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
- 15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to
Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?
He saith unto
him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
- 16 He saith to him again the second time,
Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest
that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
- 17 He saith unto him the third time,
Simon,
son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the
third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things;
thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Three times
reminding Peter than three times he denied knowing the Lord. That is
why Peter was grieved.
- John 21:18
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou
wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when
thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird
thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
- 19 This spake he, signifying by what death he
should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
The Lord warned
Peter ahead of time that his choice to follow Him would result in
his own death. Tradition says that Peter was crucified like Christ
but had the people turn him upside down because he felt unworthy to
die as Jesus died. Peter resides now in heaven and will be comforted
forever.
- John 21:20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the
disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper,
and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
- 21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and
what shall this man do?
- 22 Jesus saith unto him,
If I will that he
tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
- 23 Then went this saying abroad among the
brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He
shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
This is still a
problem for many of us. We look on our brethren and wonder what they
should be doing instead of being concerned with what we can do
ourselves to further the gospel. This is why Jesus told us not to
judge one another in certain matters. We are to judge sin and preach
against it but some things have to be left to the Lord.
Some
believe that perhaps John didn't die at the time of the early church
and perhaps he could be one of the two witnesses that come in the
tribulation period. That means that he will have to die. We see in
the book of Revelation that the two witnesses are executed. If John
is one of them, he will die eventually. That he was one of the two
future witnesses is just speculation
and is not to be taken as the word of God.
- John 21:24 This is the disciple which testifieth of
these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
- 25 And there are also many other things which
Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even
the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
This may be why the
gospels are the same yet different for some cover certain events and
leave out others. There were probably so many events that it was
impossible to write down all of them.
One thing that is
not left out and that is the message of the gospel to save us from
sin.
Matthew 1:21 is the angel speaking to Mary.
- Mark 2:9
Whether is it easier to say to the sick
of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed,
and walk?
- 10
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth
to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
- 11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up
thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
Healing went along with the gospel and it is
supposed to happen now in this day and age.
- Luke 24:46 And said unto them,
Thus it is written,
and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
- 47
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his
name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Again we are reminded that repentance is an
important part of the gospel.
-
John 1:29 The next day John seeth
Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which
taketh away the sin of the world.
-
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto
him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
-
Mark 16:16 He that believeth
and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall
be damned.
-
John 3:16 For God so loved
the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
